The Calyx Peak Story
Calyx Peak Companies is a renowned leader of the legal cannabis revolution. We are committed to shaping the industry by creating and growing businesses that bring the highest levels of integrity, innovation, and standards to this formerly unregulated field of business.
We invest in, operate, and manage cannabis assets, including more than 300,000 square feet of cultivation, extraction, and distribution facilities in multiple states.
Our diverse team of medical, business, construction, and cannabis industry experts are committed to challenging the conventional and often misunderstood thinking about this powerful plant.
Calyx Peak was founded in early 2016 by four friends with deep roots in the global equities market: Howard Keum, Michael Bang, and two silent partners. The group’s first move was to make a small investment in an indoor grow operation in northern Nevada, and within 18 months, they had expanded their investments to include a 8-acre farm in Santa Barbara County, California, and an indoor cultivation facility in Ohio.
Given the life-changing and life-saving medicinal benefits cannabis has to offer, the founders were committed to educating themselves about its capabilities. They received guidance from one of the leading advocates in the field, Dr. Paul Song, a board-certified radiation oncologist in Los Angeles, and a partnership was formed; he joined Calyx Peak as Chief Medical Officer in 2017.
In addition to his ongoing work on Calyx Peak’s health-related ventures, Dr. Song inspired Calyx Peak's wellness brand, SONG, which will use scientific research and exacting standards to create a range of high-quality products for a multitude of conditions.
Another key early addition to the Calyx Peak team was Josh Del Rosso, a legendary grower in Los Angeles, whose OG Kush—with its layered aroma, pure potency, and rare effects—forever changed cannabis culture when it hit the scene in the mid-1990s. In 2017, Calyx Peak was contacted by Del Rosso, and the founders realized that Del Rosso’s unparalleled knowledge and phenomenal skill set would be an asset to the company.
Del Rosso joined Calyx Peak and launched his genetics and cultivation practices in the Carpinteria facility in 2018. In 2019, Calyx Peak acquired his Josh D brand of cannabis products. Del Rosso is now the Vice President of the Josh D brand and works with the Calyx Peak team to drive the success of this flagship brand.
By 2018, with the company’s investments, staff, and ambitions steadily growing, Calyx Peak named Ed Schmults, former CEO of FAO Schwarz and COO of Patagonia, as CEO of the company. This solidified the company’s mission to build and market products that create strong emotional connections with customers.
Calyx Peak continued to add to its executive ranks in 2019, with Erin Carachilo, an experienced retail finance and operations executive, as VP of Finance; Jen McLaughlin, a data-driven merchant, as VP of Product Development & Merchandising; and Ben Cook, with previous C-suite roles at Sam’s Club and MedMen, as COO.
As the business evolves so, too, do our roles and responsibilities. Josh ceded the lead cultivation role in June 2019 to Dan Wittlinger, who led the team to 4 top 10 finishes at the 2019 Emerald Cup. Josh is now focused on tapping his deep industry contacts and knowledge to help expand the Josh D brand in California and launch it in new states.
This ability to adapt to change is vital to success in any fast-growing industry, but particularly necessary in the non-linear development of the Cannabis industry.
Calyx Peak was awarded a social equity license for a retail store in Los Angeles as well as 3 cultivation, 1 extraction and 1 retail license in Missouri. We look forward to building out these assets in 2020.
